HP got half of what they wanted - they saved BILLIONS of DOLLARS on NOT building the wafer fabs to build whatever proprietary PA-RISC chips they would have needed.

Even their interim PA-RISC chips have used Intel - and lately IBM - as state of the art foundry sources.

Other than that, HP has found - like Compaq - and like IBM - the underlying hardware is only the vehicle for delivering the software.

So, HP and Compaq and IBM - all have a chance to deliver new OSs, applications and servers based on the underlying Intel/IA64 architecture.
