I just stopped in for a minute, qcoman, and would just offer a couple of thoughts. I have not read the book, but I am wondering how he defines consciousness so as to be able to differentiate it from non consciouness, and so as to tentatively develop time lines reflective of the distinction? For instance, you mentioned that it emerged around 1000 B.C. But Man had lived for millions of years. He had tools and reasoning throughout the stone, bronze, and iron ages. It is difficult for me to believe that a serious case may be made for his being without consciousness during all this time. Were the Minoans not conscious with their palaces, tableware, tools, and arts??

I guess the rub must be in how he is choosing to define consciousness; because if it is anything at all to do with purposeful reasoning, then he will need to adjust his timelines considerably. Catch you later.

>This statement does not argue the point, it is rather agreeable. Better or
worse is not the question. Different is the question. How are we different from
the men of pre 1000 BC, who were ruled by the voices of the gods? Who
were theoretically unconsciousness. That's what the theory attempts to
provoke>.

How can we know they were ALL ruled by the voices of Gods? I don't even know if most were ruled by the voices of Gods, and no one else does either. We can speculate, but that's all it comes down to. I find it silly to speculate on things that do not seem to be provable- it's too much like religion, which I cannot stand. And I hate to see belief and fantasy dressed up in scientific clothing. That is my perception.
