I only have an uninformed opinion, but that never stopped me before. I can imagine that pinning down self awareness to a date that more or less matches the bible creation date could make the author the hero of yet another cult. He would love the debate to accept the premise but push the age back a couple of millenia. A lot of the so called scientific creationists keep trying to redefine a few things - a metaphoric day - the creation of man being his self awareness and not his physical body. A few redefinitions and they can get the bible and the facts to jive close enough to fool some of the people, at least enough to get their dough.

but I am wondering how he defines consciousness so as to be able to differentiate it from non consciouness, and so as to tentatively develop time lines reflective of the distinction?

Consciousness is the space where the "I" is located. You can have cognition and perception without it. Clinically and anecdotally, this can be proven, as I have known since my undergrad days. Jaynes does a great job with presenting supporting scientific evidence that is meticulously footnoted. It may help to grasp the concept better to think of a man hypnotized and acting under suggestion with a mild case of schizophrenia as close to what early man may have experienced in bicameral state.
