There are people today engaged in fetish worship, and mass schizophrenic experiences, and there were probably people then (imo) not the majority- just as today- who weren't. In order to get things done mass schizophrenic experiences come in useful. A fearful obedient population can be a great collective organism. People with an extreme sense of self- which it sort of sounds like you are talking about- are dangerous to societies that are living on the edge and "need" to change, fast (imo). That's why people always turn on the intellectuals, I think. They probably do get in the way of mass movements. Ironically intellectuals usually precipitate them, and then are killed by them. I find it hard to imagine such dynamics did not always exist in our species. I do not see much evidence for change. And the evidence for burial practices, etc is scant and we are very ignorant about how to interpret it.

Jaynes of course could be right. I can't possibly prove him wrong, nor would I engage in the fruitless pursuit of trying to prove a negative. But I really don't see the point of writing a big book about a theory that you simply cannot prove in any conceivable way, ever. It would be difficult to prove if you had the live people right HERE now. After all there are plenty of people on SI that seem to be living in a cultural induced hypnosis, a mass schizophrenic experience, a right brain controlled society. Surely you've met them. They call themselves Republicans. :-) The smiley- I hope will tell you that I am not "riled."
