HONG KONG -- China's top computer maker, Legend Holdings Ltd., posted a 79% jump in net profit for the last fiscal year, matching forecasts by analysts and helping distinguish the country as one of the few big markets that has managed to evade a downturn in personal-computer sales.

Last year, Chinese consumers scooped up 7.2 million new computers, 36% of the total for the region not including Japan, according to research firm IDC. World No. 2 market Japan sold only twice that many machines last year. And China is expected to keep closing the gap. "By 2005 we think China will account for 42%" of Asian sales, said Dane Anderson, IDC's head of regional computer research.
