9:00AM Semi Capex Cuts : Lots of talk about capex cuts this morning; Micron (MU) said at its analyst meeting yesterday that 2002 capex would be $1.0 bln, down from $1.8 bln in 2001. And last night, Toshiba - Japan's largest chipmaker - said that capex in the fiscal year ended Mar 02 will be $800 mln, down roughly 30% from its plans of just two months ago. Goldman Sachs says that semi equipment stocks will continue to trade flat to down as investors tire of waiting for fundamentals to recover.

8:03AM Merrill on Semi Equip : Merrill Lynch responds to yesterday's speculation that Intel (INTC) might have upped semi equipment orders; Merrill says it believes that Intel remains on track with its 300mm plans, neither accelerating nor delaying plans; company checks with sources at AMAT, KLAC, and NVLS indicate that order values have been in line with expectations thus far, and that shipment schedules for 300mm equipment to Intel fabs have not changed.

AD,
Still beware. If Nasdaq decides to go back to higher end of its range amat will move too. My bones still say strong nasdaq and very strong amat today. I was wrong yesteday when i said this but i think there are factors apart from klac/intc that are at work with the market right now. I am assuming most if not all the warnings are out of the way and the market will focus on better times ahead for at least a week or two. Mike
