<...IF the standard was based on Qualcomm's original requirements of a single unified standard based on QCOM's definitions.. Then there would be "no doubt" who the leader in 3G would be! ...>

I think you mean QUALCOMM. But suppose Nokia and L M Ericsson and the rest of the hagfish had agreed way back to cdma2000 instead of their Mickey Mouse attempt to ring-fence Europe and create a cartel standard [VW0] and hijack the intellectual property, everyone would be far more advanced and cdma2000 could be rolling out now across Europe.

Nokia, Ericsson, Siemens etc would be fully competitive instead of struggling around trying to catch up with the Koreans who are still gaining ground.

It seems as though there is not going to be any extended lifetime for GSM as a result of the VW40 game [because cdma2000 hasn't been ready until now anyway]. There has been no capitulation on IPR and in fact there has been a strengthening of QUALCOMM claims as the markets have recognized the huge value of CDMA [by adopting the technology for the 3G flavours and as shown by the spectrum auctions] and as shown by judicial support of QUALCOMM's patents.

VW40 is increasingly looking like a failure, although by changing to essentially a cdma2000 version with some bells and whistles it is likely to continue as a separate version and will successfully make it to market. It will be like having one version of a Lexus and another [W-CDMA] with a tailfin spoiler at the back, perhaps with some racing stripes on the sides. There will be increased drag with the spoiler, but some people will think it looks cool.

The whole VW40 game has been a costly charade with no benefit to the GSM Guild. If they had succeeded it would have been a different story. But they didn't. Now they are up the creek without a paddle.

QUALCOMM didn't have absolute power at all because they licensed many suppliers, early on, to ensure buyers had confidence in CDMA, to ensure success, diversify designs and draw in huge capital investment to CDMA as well as engineers. Because of the widespread licensing, there is no monopoly, it's a global technology and success is now rampant.
