My point is that, by my figuring, this precedent this would set would make it extremely difficult, if not entirely impossible, to profit by trading from the short side, as many if not most of the more potentially profitable short targets would execute similar wholesale buy-ins, out of spite if nothing else. So, the major players that engage in short selling will quite simply be forced to stop doing so. Yes, I agree that stocks will find their own level in the end, but it will take a lot longer to see that happen, and in the meantime we would see much higher spikes and much more dramatic collapses as a result of the short sellers being taken out of the game.
