GRAY DAVIS IN THE DOCK Court Orders Cases to Proceed Concerning Energy Crisis and Davis’ Chinagate Involvement (Washington, DC) Judicial Watch, the public interest law firm that investigates and prosecutes public abuse and corruption, recently scored two key victories in lawsuits against California Governor Gray Davis. Davis was sued when he refused to turn over documents, pursuant to the California Public Records Act, about, among other energy-related issues, the huge amount of political campaign contributions which he took from energy utilities, as well as his ties to key Chinagate fundraisers. Davis moved to dismiss both lawsuits, but recently the Superior Court for the County of Los Angeles threw out Governor Davis’ dismissal motions. The cases will now proceed, and a hearing is scheduled for August 5, 2001. “Governor Davis has tried to delay, but his time to come clean on his cozy, incestuous relationship with the public utilities who have ripped off California consumers, and Chinagate fundraisers, has arrived,” stated Judicial Watch Chairman and General Counsel Larry Klayman.

"Meanwhile, the court has been bombarded with thousands of letters from angry Americans, some of whom have sent in their voter registration cards suggesting that going to the polls in November was a waste of time. ''For shame!'' one letter said. Many messages to the justices have been sarcastic, ohers more menacing -- including one with an illustration of a skull and crossbones. More significantly, there are signs that the fallout from Bush vs. Gore has become a factor in at least one justice's yearnings for retirement. Sandra Day O'Connor has told people close to her that in her two decades on the court,he has never seen such anger over a case. O'Connor, more than any justice,as seemed disturbed by the public wrath directed at the court. In the Florida case, she sided with the court's conservatives in supporting Bush's argument and blocking Democrat Al Gore's push for further ballot recounts. . People close to the justices say the decision was particularly uncomfortable for O'Connor because she, along with Chief Justice William Rehnquist, 76, stood as potential beneficiaries of a Bush election victory. Both have considered retirement, and it's accepted among court analysts that the two justices, both Republicans, would prefer that a GOP president name their successors".
