After a late lunch, some of the kids were out side playing, the rest of them were in watching television. Somewhat feeling the need to spend quality time with them, I suggested we play a game of kick ball. My daughter looked at me and said, "Mom, are you going to play too??" I said sure. (Oh my aching body!!) She then went out and told the other kids. Instantly the arguments started, "I'm gonna be a captain" "No, I am a captain" "I wanna be the other captain" all 9 children vying for the title "captain." I had to resolve it in my usual manner. Nine slips of paper, two of which will have the word captain written on them. Emily came in the house reporting to me that I needed 10 slips of paper, as one of the children visiting at the neighbors wanted to play. I ask who else was playing. Emily told me it was "Mark. She continued, "His relatives live behind us," I told her fine he could play, With that I went outside to have them pick who would be captain. Silly me, I should have done "captain 1" and "captain 2" on the slips of paper, as to who was going to pick FIRST. (I'll do that next time) The two captains made their first pick. Them I let each of the children that were picked, pick the next player. Whew that went fairly smooth. The team that picked first had to be in the outfield first. (Gosh were we this picky as kids??? I am sure we were!!) It did not seem as if we played that long, but I guess it was about an hour. The kids seemed to be having fun. Mark played and was actually one of the best players out there. I could see his competitive nature!!! Which was good, sometimes my son Michael needs some good players to challenge his abilities. As a matter of fact, Mark made a great play and got Michael out. After the game Michael said somewhat joking, somewhat indignant, "So why did you have to make the best play of the game against me?" I gave all the kids freezer pops. Had one with them myself . It was a good time. And I bet my kids will remember "the day Mom played kickball!!"
