Compaq-Intel move in depth

Shannon's Cannon
By Mike Magee, 04/07/01 09:39:21 BST

TERRY SHANNON, who produces the thorough newsletter Shannon knows Compaq has delivered his considered verdict on the move in his latest issue.
The newsletter, which is subscription only, looks at how Intel will weld the Alpha architecture to its own purposes, but also takes a deep look at Compaq's reasons for the move.

One paragraph is telling: "Compaq faces a very tough competitive battle, and failure to adopt an aggressive proactive stance in a difficult business environment woul dhave grave consequences for the incumbent Compaq management team and for the firm itself. Those who fail to learn from history are doomed to repeat it, and SKC hopes that Compaq has analyzed the Alpha "fossil record" and the multiplicity of marketing misfires that hobbled the architecture."

He says that the www.cets2001.com conference will reveal further details of what will happen next.

He also mentions the fact that the INQUIRER scooped the world on the story, showing that a "one man banned" can do quite a lot more than many.

In fact, he's interesting about the veil of secrecy that Q and INTC imposed, and that we somehow or other managed to pierce. When we first heard about the deal it could have been either IBM or Intel that acquired Alpha technology. Engineers leaked the story to the INQUIRER while everyone else kept very quiet indeed. And it's no good instituting a witch-hunt, Compaq, there's no way you'll find out how we got the story.

We've tracked Compaq since 1985 and even though a lot of our pals have moved elsewhere, will continue to keep our beady eye on the Little Q's going on. µ
