Funny, I am willing to accept PPD as a contributing factor, but for me her "guilt" - and I also can't help but hold the husband somewhat accountable on this front and am curious how the men perceive this-- began with the conception of this last child. She had already been a suicide risk, had been on a great deal of medication, and surely must have been foundering with the children she already had. Why on earth did they conceive again? And why didn't her husband take precautions if she was out of touch with her own problems?

Maybe this has been explored in the media-- I'm not a newspaper reader.

As for the article, it hit right on our topic of "the other", didn't it! It is much harder to remove her from the "us" and replant her in the "them", I think. When I was a social worker, many moons ago,one of the secretaries' husbands had an affair and shot the husband of the woman. Despite the daily sordid situations we were all used to dealing with, this absolutely devastated us. It crossed the lines. Suddenly one of "us" became one of the people with whom we worked. I think we all feel vulnerable when this happens. Several years ago, we were discussing PPD here and one man spoke very honestly about his experience with his wife's PPD. It was the psychotic depressive kind and was truly terrifying and dangerous. I gained a lot of sympathy for the problem after that. I don't think we can fairly compare McVeigh to Yates.

I seem to remember reading last week that the US is very behind- and is one of only a couple of countries that don't recognize and make allowances for PPD legally.

Edit: I see TS said the same thing rather more clearly than I!
