TG, Re: But unless the world wide processor shipments increased from Q1, this means that they gained unit market share in processors again this Q?

Or they tried desperately to reach their sales goal by stuffing the channel.

Re: record aggregate PC processor unit sales

Anyone recall offhand what the previous record for unit CPU sales was?

Any estimates of the total market and VIA/Transmeta this quarter? (and so, what remained for Intel)

TG,

I am some 10,000 posts behind, but it didn't take rocket scientist to figure out that the ASPs were in (and are still going to) the toilet. A check of Pricewatch showed clear trend. I think Intel is in the same boat with their desktop prices, but their notebook, server and workstation chips should be holding up OK, because of no competition from no-show Palomino.

I think Q3 will be brutal for AMD, since Palomino is such a disaster, well behind the clock speeds of even Thunderbird, while it needs to compete with clock speeds of P4. We may actually see losses in Q3, because of further deterioration of ASPs.

Duron might have been a hit at 1 GHz this Q, but AMD management / marketing missed the boat on that as well. But now, there is not even a point to introduce 1 GHz Duron, since 1 GHz Athlon is priced at Duron prices.

Joe

PS: I didn't have much time to hang around here, since I have been playing with a new baby. She is clocked at 7 lbs 14 oz. My wife is working on overclocking her to 20x the original spec.

<But unless the world wide processor shipments increased from Q1, this means that they gained unit market share in processors again this Q?>

You have to parse the sentence about record unit sales very carefully. Jerry is pulling a clinton here. Remember that this is the first quarter without K6-2 sales. So they can have record units in Athlon and Duron and yet sell fewer total number of CPUs in Q2 than in Q1.
