S&P 500 Index Money Underpins Nortel

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Nortel Networks Corp. , Canada's fallen technology star, is one of the few non-U.S. players in the benchmark Standard & Poor's 500 index , with a weighting of just 0.246 percent.

But Standard & Poor's Corp. downplayed the possibility it might drop Nortel stock from the index, a fate which could put its already battered share price under additional pressure.
