Overthrust belt was last big lower 48 onshore oil play, and that was 1980's

The real DEEP water Gulf stuff is relativley new, but look at the price !

In terms of new areas there is some activity up in North Datoka and Montana, and there are extensions to fields in New Mexico.

Frac technology & horizontal drilling for attacking shale & lime formations has turned previousl uneconomic (but know) areas into producible reserves, but mostly for natural gas.

We need some new geological theories, and maybe some production technology, or we wioll see a big decline in oil production in the U.S. much sooner that we would like.
