I think it is perfectly understandable for the carriers to continue with non-1x phones.

1) There will be price difference between the non 1x and 1x handsets.

2) Although 1x handsets will be backward compatible with the existing networks. But before you actually test your products with the new networks, it is still sort of risky to have the handsets in the market before the networks are ready.

3) It's actually not a bad idea to keep on upgrading the products from time to time. That can actually spice up the appetite of the public perception.

Last Friday, I made a phone call to Sprint because they messed up my invoice. After waiting for about 30 minutes. I finally got someone, when I was done with the bill problem, I told the operator that Sprint should improve the coverage. I was told that Sprint is doing that by adding new cell cites in SF, OC and SD areas.

But I forgot to ask about their 1x plans:-)

Oh well...
