"The real question is... "Why would anyone want to buy an Athlon when DELL P4's are selling for $799?""

A 1.3GHz P4 with PC600 memory? If you want Celeron performance, why not buy a Celeron? They are cheaper...

No monitor. No sound card. No speakers. No modem.

"Why would anyone want to buy an Athlon when DELL P4's are selling for $799?"

1 - Because most Athlons are faster then P4 1.3ghz chips.

2 - I went to configure the system and tried reducing the price as low as possible. With a Pentium 4 1.3, no monitor, PC600RDRAM, a 20 GB "value" (read slow) HD, a reduction in the warrantee to 1 year from 3, replaceing Win2000 with WinMe or Win98SE, a cheap video card, the least expensive CD option, no sound card, speakers, modem or NIC, and no option extras I was only able to get the price down to $908. My Duron system would be more useful, at least it has a monitor and a modem, a good sound card, and a NIC as well as a bigger and probably faster HD.
