You can bet that someday we will drill off the left coast. The North Slope of Alaska will get a workover too. If the econuts have their way, they will be the last proven reserves on the planet. At the moment, oil is too cheap and gasoline too plentiful. When gasoline is $5 a gallon and gas rationing a way of life, they will drill the North Slope. In the big picture, this delay is good for the oil companies. The longer we wait, the more valuable those reserves become.

There is record drilling going on in the US at it is. We will never get off dependence on foreign oil because we don't have anywhere near enough of it. shallow wells in the US are pretty well spent. you can argue we ought to drilling in pristine wilderness but I'd rather wean ourselves off the stuff. a 20 year plan to get off oil, at least 50% off oil. now that would work. problem is the GOP will kill it before it begins. that is why soft money ruins our system. because even though it's good for us we can't do it because special interests control key leaders. like the entire administrative branch. instead of wanting to spend 100 billion on a Star Wars system against a non-existent enemy why not spend a fraction of it to make renewable sustainable fuels our #1 priority? more than anything Bush shows us the need for this. because the alternative is a dirtier more corrupt and less self-reliant world where our national treasures will be under attack every time the wrong people get into power.
