Sorry Steve, evolutionary science did, and does, exactly that. Evolution is the "out" that atheist's have been looking for, explain away God, and it is clearly used that way.

Evolutionary science developed as an explanation for observed phenomena.
It didn't start with a conclusion and work backwards, looking for evidence to
support that conclusion.

Precisely the way religions developed.
