Evolutionary science began, and has continued, as an alternative explanation for observed phenomena that were clearly inconsistent with the traditional religious explanation. In that sense, religion (as opposed to God) needed to be explained away: accumulated evidence made it clear that the explanations provided by religion were simply wrong. The alternative explanation is incomplete, and it changes daily, but it is already more consistent with available evidence than the crock of superstition that preceded it, and as we learn more, it will improve.
