Well, your theory is just that.

But it doesn't explain most modern religions. All the protestant religions were the outgrowths of one or a few persoms who had what they contended were divinely inspired revelations or insights and developed religions around them. Islam, the same. Bahai, the same. None of them arose fully developed. They were evoloutionary developments.
