Pravin:

"AMD to intRo 1GHz Duron, axe prices Monday"

Sounds like AMD's Duron is intent on covering off INTC's P3 and Celeron by segmenting the market at (a)1 gig and under, and sounds like AMD is intent on covering off INTC's P4 with its Athy at(b)over 1 gig...Sounds like a plan!

Pravin, Re: 1 GHz Duron introduction on Monday

This is a good step IMO (although much too late). If AMD is successful at establishing 1 GHz as the bottom line for value systems, Duron systems could become quite popular. Let's hope that AMD cut some deals with top-tier OEMs to offer cheap 1 GHz Duron systems Monday so they are available for the back to school shopping period. However, AMD will have to price the Duron in the $60-70 range to be successful, since the 1 GHz Athlon already sells at $83.

Another round of price cuts, however, is really bad news. AMD's ASPs are already in the toilet (I estimate them in the $70 range now if you exclude Athlon 4 and Athlon MP), and as I suspected 1.53 GHz won't be introduced before September. Looks like a very tough quarter ahead.
