I beg to differ. Witness Y2K. In the general press it was a reality. At least on the net there was an interchange of thinking. You can always buy the wrong line of BS but at least you had a choice.

Mitch, I see your point. But as Willcousa pointed out, the internet allows an exchange of information that is not restrictive. As one example, if newspapers started printing too much false information, I believe informal "newspapers" would spring up on the web that people would turn to. I see much more of the positive effects of the web when it comes to the issue of how hard it is to uncover the truth.
