I see the push for GPRS extensions as a stop-gap defensive approach because of the failure of UMTS to materialize as first planned, not for the primary purpose of playing out a vast conspiracy to avoid paying QCOM royalties.

I agree with you. However, the initial push into WCDMA was clearly political and clearly designed to not pay Q its rightful royalties. We are now living with the financial detritus of this incredibly stupid and badly thought out idea. No one in his right mind, not even Nokia, is taking the position now that Q is not owed for any flavor of CDMA. OK, Alcatel and another brainless Euro, but they'll fall, too, in time.
