It's hard to imagine that we've made progress, but I think we have. Major countries aren't doing each other in like we did in the good ol' days. The major countries now worry more about trade wars.
I think you're being a bit Pollyannish here (if there is such a word. (Well, there is now!)) There have been long interregnums between major wars before.
This one is only 56 years long now (1945-2001). Europe went from 1815 to 1914 in the previous one- -99 years.

If there are two nations left on this planet, there will be war. To end extenal wars, the number will have to be only ONE- -world govenment. And then you have to worry about civil war.

As that old saying has it:
"Only the dead have seen the end of war."
