Of course it is easy to say you're going to chop taxes and make the military, well, even more superior to any potential opponent than it already is. But it defies certain elements of mathematics, and is certainly not evidence of fiscal conservatism.

It doesn't defy any elements of mathematics. It may not be politically easy but that is another thing. The military represents only about 3% of the US GDP and only about 16% of Federal government spending. If your just talking mathematics you could double or triple military spending, cut taxes, and have large and growing surpluses. Politically that would be impossible, and IMO it would be undesirable but it would certainly be mathematically possible.

In inflation adjusted dollars military spending went down well over a third. (as a percentage of GDP over half). I'm not saying this was a bad idea, but many people complain about why we haven't cut military spending, so I want to make it clear that we have done so. Our force levels and readiness of the forces at these reduced levels have both been greatly reduced. Because the threat level was also reduced these reductions may have been a good thing but the peace dividend has all ready happend and most of it was spent on other government programs.

Also your post implies that the Bush administration is planning some big hike in military spending. If they are they are keeping it a very good secret.
