There's nothing faulty with requesting that he take a polygraph since the information that he's provided to the police has been false. The use of the polygraph does not have to be to ascertain whether he's guilty, but the veracity of the facts surrounding background of her disapperance. They probably wouldn't have resorted to this tool if he had been forthright in the first place, let alone try to get someone else to make false statements to the police.
