yes, I agree that US is a unique country.

Not any longer... We were 200 years ago, but since then many countries have adopted democratic and economic reforms.

Of course, many haven't been quite as successful as they could have been, but others have been spectacular in their success. Even the Japanese, never a people known for possessing a democratic history is democratic.

Now if your saying that that Chinese people don't have the resolve or ability of doing something that the Japanese and Taiwanese have been able to accomplish, then I guess they are pretty backward.

if democracy in China exists, foreigners could easily bribe certain groups for easy political access to the country.

How is that any different than now? Are you telling me that with complete and utter control over the Chinese economy that corruption and pay-offs aren't taking place?

And why has Chinese intelligence outfits tried to bribe US politicians?

Why is Bejing trying to militarily intimidate the people of Taiwan, an Island that has more of a history with the Portugese, than with the Han Chinese?

The reason Bejing can do this is because they are a lawless government, arbitrarily granting and withdrawing rights and legal protections for favored elements who continue to support their staying in power.

But cross the line and oppose the "unchosen few" and you suddenly find you have no rights. And without democratic reforms and accountability, the only opportunities will exist for those who tout "the party line".

And being a patriot is not the same as possessing nationalistic extremism to the detriment of surrounding nations.

There is a long history of the communists invading their neighbors. Russian, India, Vietnam, Tibet, S. Korea...

When's the last time a western nation invaded China? At least 100 years ago.

For that matter, when's the last time Taiwan threatened to attack the mainland?

And as a final point... why should a non-democratic nation like China enjoy the benefit of hosting an international sporting competition founded by the world's first democracy, Greece??
