i still think you overestimate 600 dollars---it will be a one month blip, imo. The key to that article is our economy is so consumer dependent to the extreme that EVEN a slight downturn in consumer spending will cause damage.
We have an economy that demands spending on a "there is no tomorrow" basis.
The consumer have maxed out their mortgages and their credit cards, and historically when savings become negative it is a signal to consumer exhaustion and a trend reversal.
But it will take but a modest amount of consumer economizing to be a can of molasses into the engine of our economy.
Also, their is a definite pattern that those losing and getting new jobs, are working for less pay, this is a major downside to the rehired.
And again i feel you may be surprised at how much of that tax rebate is ALREADY spent.
If this rebate was coming at a time that consumer debt was not at major and dangerous highs,i would side with you more, but that is not the case.Max

another item i came across, but it is anecdotal,i can't find a statistic on it.But it is talking of Boomers that made so much in the past 20 years that they managed to realize their dream of retiring in their 50s.And that money is in a big part going into travel.
So,yet another potential downside of the post bubble,is the number of people going into early retirement.
Before you give anecdotal contrary evidence,i am talking only those in their 50s(those affluent Middle Classers who once were "tune-in/drop-out" HipPies:),they have been riding this market for the last 20 years. The downturn was just a signal to close their account with the golden goose.Max
