Columbus brought Conquistadores, chickenpox, horses... (what else, oh yes, little brothers and Dominicans and later Jesuits, what a journey for J. Christ that was) to Americas and returned with tobacco, siphilis (?) ... potato, corn... What a way to mix genetic pools.

The Indian who offered his captors a large room full of gold was Atahualpa, an Inca, and the offer was made to Pizarro.

As your source says, it was the Toltecs and Mayas who believed in Quetzalcoatl - and it was Cortez who took advantage of the Quetzalcoatl myth.

So instead of setting me straight, you picked the wrong continent, and the wrong conquistador. Oooops. Don't you just hate it when that happens?:^)

>>An incredible story which you unfortunately minimize.<<

Well, this is hardly the time or the place to give a scholarly exegesis on the conquest of the New World. The question was, are wars ever economically beneficial to the combatants? My answer was, yes, sometimes, and gave as an example the return that the Spanish crown got on its investment in New Spain.

My assumption is that we are all educated people here, so I assume that it's ok to speak in shorthand when trying to make a point.

Compared to the price paid by the Indians, the Spanish made out like bandits, didn't they?
