We must not forget that Jesus Christ seldom gave straight answers -- for a reason -- to avoid giving the Pharisees and Saducees (right-wingers) what they wanted: hard evidence of sedition. When asked direct questions, Jesus more often than not answered with a question of his own. Or a parable. Or a statement followed by an admonition, i.e., "Let ye who is without sin ... go and do likewise." Thus, while the primary message of "turn the other cheek" may be as you say (no one can know for sure), it also may have carried a deeper meaning, one with hard political clout.
