AMD is ALREADY using sub 0.09 micron transistors (Leff) on their 0.18 micron PaloMeatHead CPU.

Actually if you look at the benchmarks at Anand's site, the 1.8GHz chip is at parity or better on the overwhelming majority of benchmarks... the 2.0GHz will slap the 1.4GHz K7 silly...

THAT'S a fair statement. In terms of overall performance moving forward, the K7 core isn't going to be able to keep up with the P4 core EXCEPT in perhaps performance/die area.

You also continue to claim that AMD uses .13 transistors in their .18 process. You can expect them to use .09 transistors in their .13 process - one of the reasons why they prefer SOI.

Actually that's not technically correct. As Leff decreases the benefits of SOI also decrease. Based on the numbers I've seen brandished about, AMD is using an ~85nm Leff currently to get high binsplits on the K7 core. Intel's 0.13 micron process is going to use 70nm gates (at least that's what the press releases have indicated). I honestly don't think AMD would be able to produce 0.09 micron generation gates next year to couple with their 0.13 micron generation backend, as a 0.09 micron node gate is expected to be ~50nm. You're really going to need 193nm to do that, and I honestly don't think either the steppers or the resists are up to snuff yet.

The short answer, Intel gets a much bigger bang going to 0.13 than AMD. AMD's gains from SOI are not in evidence, and are not due for 12 months anyway. Intel's 0.13 micron parts are shipping NOW. Twelve months is an eternity in this industry. I'm not convinced that AMD's Q4 is going to be as rosy as they hope. Which is sad, as I own some AMD stock that really took punch to the nose recently... Maybe I'll be able to sell at a loss and use it as a tax write-off..
