Here's a little something to take your mind off your fight to the death with Solon, at least for a few minutes.

I've been scratching my head over this tax rebate notice from the IRS. It's a silly little thing, but it's bugging me. The envelope has a return address from the IRS, an IRS logo a little over an inch square, and a red box with red text that reads:

ENCLOSED IS AN IMPORTANT
MESSAGE FROM THE IRS
ON THE STATUS AND AMOUNT OF
IMMEDIATE TAX RELIEF.
DON'T THROW IT AWAY.

Inside I find that I'll be receiving $300 in about two weeks, which I already knew because that information has been in the news. And that I need to store the notice with my tax records. I assume that means that the retention requirement is three years, which is the records requirement for tax filings, although it says I don't have to report it on my taxes.

Say what?

First they tell me I have to open it, which I would have done without the red lettering because it clearly came from the IRS. Then they tell me I have to keep it, even though I am not required to use it for anything, certainly not to get my check. So they've created a record keeping requirement that serves no purpose that I can imagine. Maybe they followed proper procedures in creating this new requirement or maybe they didn't. Record keeping requirements are supposed to be approved by OMB.

I know it's a small thing, but it's stupid and an imposition. Big government run amok.

Am I missing something here?

Duh!

Karen

You forget that to Solon, not only are babies just smudges of sperm, but people are just smudges of protoplasm, and killing them is nothing major. They're just a collection of cells, after all. And since there is no God, they can't have souls. Scientifically, there's no difference between killing an adult person, a baby, an unborn baby, or a spider. All just collections of cells.

Your explanation is that you were talking about a zygote which is 1 - not subject to induced abortion so it is not what we were talking about and 2 - not a sperm or a smudge of sperm.

You can't be serious!

"doesn't mean it is right to kill either of us. ...we are still not talking about a "smuge of sperm"."

I have never argued that it was right to kill either you or a smudge of sperm. So your comment is non responsive.
