OT re High Speed Internet.

Daryll,

Until I got my ADSL connection, I too thought that my dialup connection was "just fine". I didn't get it initially because I wasn't sure that my 3 year old PC (64MB, 200Mhz) was adequate.

The internet is so much more pleasant with ADSL than with dial up. "Always on" is a superb feature. Instantaneous response is very nice. I used to hit ENTER, then watch CNBC for a few seconds, then look back at my monitor. With ADSL, I just do my thing. What used to take 5 hours or more daily, I can now do in under 2.

And listening to webcasts with ADSL is a treat. Audio quality is as good as dialling into the call. Some of them simulcast a video feed (presentations / speakers), a feature not available when dialling into the call.

And I don't need a second line to be able to make / receive voice calls while on the net - definitely a nice feature when making option trades while talking to a broker.

So dial up is just fine as long as you haven't become accustomed to something better. And high speed internet is much, much better.

Ian

<there are maybe 20% of us who use it for much more than that but for the average Joe Six Pack with AOL at 56.6Kbs, it's fine. >

But isn't that only thinking about right now and not thinking ahead?

I'd agree with that statement, I'd agree with a number less than 20%. Right now, today. But you have these kids growing today that use the internet for a lot more than email. And you have a lot of people focused on bringing "a use" to the internet which will require a heck of a lot more than 56k eventually. Of course these innovations have been put woefully behind, maybe even stalled, for the better part of the last 12 months.

Just take today for example. I'm watching the Nascar race while trying to get some paperwork done. I'd like to possibly see the in car camera of my choice, and hear the in car radio of my choice, and I'd pay for it. But it isn't provided. More than likely not provided due to amount of bandwidth needed and the lack of widespread high speed access. What I can get is a choppy radio scan of all the incar audio and and a lap by lap updating screen. Neither of which is anywhere clos eto in real time of the tv cast.

So? Give people a reason to need and use high speed access, and they certainly would. But the application just isn't there yet for the average adult.

Point being build it, and people will use it.

d40, re >for the average Joe Six Pack with AOL at 56.6Kbs, it's fine.<

I've never met an admitted Joe sixpac on SI, yet everyone seems to know what he wants. He may just surprise us.
