Upgrading to WinXP because Win98 is crap

If that's the reason for people upgrading, well there won't be any WinXP sales boom this year. If your current OS is crap, most people will want to see XP prove itself first. Maybe many people will upgrade to escape the problems of Win98, but they will do it 2002... So not much of a sales boost this year.

I would recommend to all users to look at their current software, and see what programs absolutely need Win98/Me etc

I understand most games run faster on Win98 and some will not even run on Win2k.

RE:"The update to Win2k worked but the system crashed every now and then, so I decided on a fresh install on the same hardware. As mentioned above, no troubles since. "

I have upgrade my brother's w98-->w2k in august last year while I was visiting him in California. I then reinstall win98 to leave him W2k + W98 multiboot system. Recently I have ask him which system he use most. He told me it's W2k exclusively and it never crash.

Re: Win2K experiences...

I have had two crashes in 18 months of 24/7 operation (total mos among three machines). And one of these crashes was when I accidentally disconnected the HDD <stupid grin> while messing around. Some applications (Netscape) aren't always nice about sharing so stall other apps - but perhaps I haven't adjusted a priority setting someplace. While I have had apps crash, it has almost never resulted in any instability for other apps (no data lost). Game performance is not an issue for me - but Anand has some articles comparing performance between W9* and W2K which not in particular that Radeon drivers suffered far more than Nvidia. (I had to do a little research on graphics cards for a gamer box to build next week - any assistance by PM on video cards would be appreciated.)
