Amy,

re: Maybe not, if they have a low-cost way of achieving the same result over time.

I'm know very little about mergers and acquisition strategy. But it's obvious that Intel's direction has been a complete failure. You can sift through the ashes and find a few minor successes, but ultimately you are left with $12 billion in investments that has lost an additional ~$6 billion since 3Q99, two years. Lost $1.2 billion in 2Q, and the trend is towards higher losses.

That $18 billion that is gone might have bought something that added a few bucks to the bottom line.

John

Hi Amy,

From lightreading.com:

PREVIOUS NEWS ANALYSIS

Cisco's Kennedy: Recruiter's Dream?

Rumors abound that Kevin J. Kennedy, senior vice president of Cisco Systems Inc.'s (Nasdaq: CSCO - message board) service provider line of business, is being seriously considered for the CEO post at Redback Networks Inc. (Nasdaq: RBAK - message board) and for a top job at Nortel Networks Corp. (NYSE/Toronto: NT - message board).

As is always the case in this business, you can't believe everything you hear, but you can repeat it. In Redback's case, so many have repeated it that it helped Redback shares climb 0.40 (8%) to 5.39 in late afternoon trading.

The first published account of the rumor appears to be a July 20 posting on Briefing.com, which attributed the speculation to trading-floor rumors.
