Why? Would you want to work for free (or Free)?

I still can't understand why some people think giving software away for free is a good business model. Having both worked with open-source and commercial applications I'd prefer the latter in almost any instance. Without money there's no real motivation for the programmers to do certain, unpleasant things. That's also IMO why some parts of Linux make great advances why others are being neglected. You'll never know when a certain feature is going to be implemented. However, I have to agree that it's sometimes a good idea to open a certain code without giving up property rights (e.g. under an GPL license).
