That's interesting. Brocade is Finisar's largest customer. BRCD is also CPQ's largest FC switch supplier. 70% of CPQ's SAN deployments go through the channel so any hiccup in CPQ's small SAN -- 4-switch maximum in 2000; 20-switch maximum in 2001 -- deployment rate is a good leading indicator for any hiccup coming from BRCD's reseller channel which accounted for around 35% of last quarter's revenues. As we've discussed before, interoperability testing becomes more critical with bigger SANs because more server and storage platforms have to be supported.

This field report might also have something to do with Finisar's unpredictable order rates. Remember that Compaq deployed the most number of SANs in 2000 in terms of units sold while EMC generated the most revenue from SANS in the same time period.

.....The CRN monthly solution provider satisfaction survey for June shows that 28 percent of the solution providers polled are satisfied with EMC's channel program, up from 22 percent in February. What's more, the number of solution providers dissatisfied with EMC's channel program has fallen significantly in the same period. In June, 19 percent of respondents said they were dissatisfied with EMC's channel program, down from 25 percent in February.

..........Ironically, EMC's surge in CRN's monthly solution provider satisfaction poll comes at a time when Compaq faces a wave of criticism from solution provider participants. Take note: The number of survey respondents who said they were dissatisfied with Compaq's channel program rose to 25 percent in June from 20 percent in February....
