At my present and eternal (keep it unnamed) employer, they did the early retirement son&dance about five six years ago. I would guess about 30% of the factory, hard-core staff was sent home on a permanent basis to watch sitcoms - well in Germany it's even worse than that, but I guess you get the point -.

Tell you what: we got a bumper year in orders, so our book to bill has been ballistic for at least a year. Twelve months delivery times - "just off the record, mr customer, and if you quote me, I'll call you a liar". And its not even Porsches we're talking about - it's Porsches alright in our branch of industry but it does not take an arm and a leg to produce. But, it takes quality manpower to do it. In other words, we face one single gigantic production BOTTLENECK.

So what we have now is tiger squads, manned with psychotic managers, -"Och, Frau Meier, zo nice to see you, been a long time, right? Can I talk to Georg for a second, och nein, he died last year?..." - hunting down the same people, they had to send packing five years ago.

At least it makes a some people feel a little better. OTOH I guess a sizeable portion says also:"Screw YOU!"

Hi elmatador, 40-45 years of doing nothing socially relevant and income producing?! In Asia, we in Hong Kong have the highest life expectancy, ahead of Australia and Japan. Retirement at 50-55 is a nutsy idea, as we can make it to 95 with high probability. I do not know why we live so long. I do observe that we appear crazier here in Hong Kong than anywhere else, doing nothing to moderation, and always doing something busily.

Retirement is a foreign idea here, as all tend to be doing something to earn money and so not spending savings. Taking vacations is not a foreign idea here. During our longer public holidays, as much as 20-25% of the population clear out of town.
