The problem Intel is having in India is with re-marked chips. Read the following article. Although it says that Intel did intimidate certain “Genuine Intel Dealers” in 1997 the present problem regards re-marked chips. Maxie just embellished the facts a shade that’s all.You will also be glad to know that the article says that AMD is gaining market share in India. By the way, how do you stand in the AMD winner and loser poll? Are you one of the ones that just love Jerry even though your stock has head south to Argentina? Anyway here’s the article.theitiq.com Intel Sacks Dealers For Selling Re-marked Chips Intel seems to have had enough with the business of re-marked chips. We had reported that the chip major was sending out squads to deal with those selling re-marked chips over the clocked variety. In a silent move, the chip major cancelled the GID (Genuine Intel Dealer) status, which is similar to the Intel Product Dealer of North America and eBN (Ebusiness network member) status, of about four dealers across the country. A prominent Bangalore-based GID was removed on Monday, according to sources in the GID camp in the City. We are not disclosing the names of the dealers in the best interest of the channel’s business. In early May 1997, Intel had warned and even sacked a few GIDs who were quoted in a prominent IT weekly as admitting to their plans to sell AMD-based machines. According to sources close to the latest episode, more GIDs may be removed. “In Bangalore alone, from the hundred-odd GIDs, at least 20 sell re-marked chips,” says our own Deep Throat. But others feel that this is only a warning from Intel. “Most of the dealers involved in the re-marked chip business are the big ones. Intel cannot afford to lose them since AMD is definitely growing from strength to strength in India,” observes DeepThroat’s friend. Intel has close to 2,500 GIDs in India, all of whom are advised to sell only boxed Intel products,. This attracts rebates and other incentives from Intel.
