And that will apply to completely new architectures with completely new OS's and completely new versions of all software.

But a 100% 32-bit performance and stability compatible, high performance, 64-bit processor. That's a heck of a lot easier to evaluate, and zero risk to implement (vs. the risk of getting stuck with an Alpha, Mips, VAX, i860, etc. style orphan). Itanium isn't the first IBM PC non-compatible architecture to be offered up as a replacement for the industry standard, it's not even the first such attempt from Intel.

If only Hammer were available to evaluate - sigh. I think your arguments actually support the AMD approach much more than the Intel approach - unfortunately for AMD, they are missing this window of opportunity.
