Well, to be absolutely blunt about it, the way it's been and the way it is now, if company X in good times had $10,000,000 to spend on platforms validation, it might go 80% Intel, 20% AMD. Today, they might have $3,000,000, and it'll all go Intel, because they know that will sell. In bad times, the stronger, richer better brand name companies make it, and the distant second might not. What did happen to AMD's MP chips and the major OEMs? I honestly think AMD will be lucky to emerge to the other side during this protracted downturn.

Dan, <But a 100% 32-bit performance and stability compatible, high performance, 64-bit processor.>

I'll bet the stability of Itanium and McKinley-based systems will be a heck-of-a-lot better than that of Clawhammer at its release. Remember that Itanium is already out, and McKinley will also be out well before Clawhammer.

Funny how that works, huh? Itanium, the poster child of slipped schedules and late launches, beating Clawhammer to market by a year-and-a-half, and thus will have more time to build an infrastructure and a reputation for stability. AMD has no other recourse but to throw FUD at Itanium in a vain attempt to hold back a tidal wave.
