Most really can't afford it... don't forget credit cards, HUD, Veteran's loans, more liberal mortgages, finance companies, and other credit sources that didn't exist then.

The country has literally mortgaged its future - look at consumer debt at record levels. One good deep recession could cause millions to go bankrupt. It's a house of cards.

People in 1900 had to pay cash for almost everything.
