The common thought that raccoons carry rabies is slightly fact, mostly fable .... that is not to say that they can't , but as a general rule they don't. I've read that there has not been a proven case of rabies transmitted to humans by a raccoon .... but be that as it may ... this quote is correct ...Adult raccoons can be savage fighters if cornered. Few dogs can successfully attack an adult who is ripping and slashing with their teeth and claws. Raccoons may even drown their opponent if in water. Raccoons may live up to 16 years in the wild, but most don't make it past their second year. The primary causes of death are humans (hunting, trapping, cars) and malnutriton. Most of the raccoon's other natural predators are no longer found in their range. So, sadly I fear, with such a number on your hands, the animal control folks in Austin are most likely your best bet. I would recco at least changing to dog food, as it is much cheaper than cat food, and the cats don't care for it, but the coons will.... and place several bowls/pans of food out at the edge of the woods instead of on your porch as the story I sent you over on the Sauna thread is a distinct possibility, as the lil rascals can open doors. Also, I suspect that rain has been scarce down there, and it wouldn't hurt to put out some a large tub or pot of water at the edge of the woods for the critters to bathe in ... as they aren't actually "filty" creatures by nature..... I would recco getting them away from the house, BUT the aforementioned pellet gun will only damage/wound them, and not kill them, therefore causing needless pain. The thing with the cats, I find quite noble.... and not a thing which makes me think you're crazy. Hey ... I've had squirrels, 'dillos, possums, and a even fox living in my yard all the 20 years I've been in the house I built in town with houses all around me. The squirrels and the dillos, I kill ... shoot em graveyard dead .... as the damage they do exceeds my love for wildlife ... the opossums, I've caught several dozen over the years with my fishing net and take them a couple of miles away to the woods behind my church ... the fox, well, she has raised two pups under the deck, most likely in the den of one of the dillos, and I enjoy having her and her pups around ... they are MUCH better than am I in reducing the squirrel population ....ggggg and the neighborhood kitty cats all know there is a bowl of food and water out for them at all times .... we have three co-habiting with the foxes right now ....ggggg Coons are tough to get rid of in quantity but those strips of cloth soaked in fox lure and tied on low branches all along the wood line might help ... but it has to be refreshed several times per week .. good luck
