Art, I don't disagree that coal is the main culprit in terms of air pollution, where we disagree is in the solution. Canada is responsible for roughly 2% of the greenhouse gases emitted in the world, most of which is created in Alberta. The greatest "offenders" are the coal-fired electricity plants, followed by the O&G industries, which includes the production of tarsands, most of which is exported. The reason for the wild opposition from Western folks is not because we don't care about the environment, it's because this is nothing more than a socialist power grab from Ottawa. It's a game they use to destabilize the growth rate of this province. They intend on keeping the powerbase in central Canada, along with the electorate, and this time around they can do it behind the politically correct banner of the environment. Alberta is (close to) debt free, lowest taxes in the country (and getting lower), politically conservative and pro-business. I don’t see any other reason they (Liberals) would sign this agreement! It’s hugely complex; it’ll require a whole new level of bureaucracy, one specifically tailored with the capability to monitor cattle flatulence… Look, Canada has massive debts, a devalued currency, where people are now selling/purchasing real estate in American dollars, combine that with brain drain to the south and essentially there is no reason I can think of to be in this country. Can we afford Kyoto? Can the U.S afford it? The U.S. contributes 25% of the greenhouse gases, did they sign on? Did Mexico? Why should the province of Alberta with its 3 million citizens shoulder the Kyoto agreement for the entire North-American continent? Regards Frank P.
