Peter Principle - re: "It took Intel years to get dual bus 8 ways "

No kidding?

AMD has been working on SMP for YEARS and it took them all those YEARS just to get to 2-ways - and they seem to be DROPPING 4 and 8-way from their Hamster plans.

AMD's execution makes Intel look like geniuses !!

Pete, <It took Intel years to get dual bus 8 ways and they ended up purchasing a company to get one that worked.>

Wrong. The purchase of Corollary was not the result of Intel throwing up their hands after years of getting 8-way to work. Intel made no real attempt at the 8-way space UNTIL they purchased Corollary. (Well, that's not entirely true. Intel's 450NX chipset was able to support a cluster bridge that connected two 4-way buses together, but its use was very limited.)

<Once you go above 4 way, Intel is in the same boat as AMD. AMD has solved it (combining two separate links or busses) faster than Intel (and did it in house) and with that out of the way, the next steps will be easier.>

AMD did not do it in-house. They borrowed the EV6 technology from Alpha. Even then, it took them years before they even got to 2-way SMP. And the jump from 2-way to 4-way and above will be even tougher. That's not just FUD I'm tossing around, either.
