no, it isn't. "productivity," as widely published on cnbs, cnn-fn, etc., is defined as gdp/worker/hour.

gdp was an economic measure. it didn't care how many widgets you made, it only cared about the dollar value of the widgets you sold. that is why it was an economic, ie, dollars and cents, measure.

gdp is now dollars, cents and alan greenspan's personal interpretation of value not captured in the amount paid for an item by the customer. you see, the free market doesn't know how to value items as well as dr greenspin - the value god.

of course, productivity can be defined in terms of widgets. however, that is DIFFERENT than the govt issued productivity numbers that are widely circulated.

don't worry, alan.com is confused in the same way you were so he screwed with the numbers to fix a problem that didn't exist. in doing so, he created the lie of the new economy and the rest is history...
