The Spur has a web site.

spurhotel.com

It's located on one of the corners by the stop light, on the block next to the Courthouse. On the same block as the Royal Theatre which is, of course, The Last Picture Show. You surely saw it but perhaps didn't recognize it as a hotel.

Things are really getting going in AC: I hear there is a B & B named The Lonesome Dove that caters to bibliophiles. But there is thankfully no chance that AC will ever be gentrified.

The cafe has had many different owners throughout the years. I had a terrific chicken-fried steak there last year. Hope it is still owned by the same people.

There is no logic to the insane bike ride. Some Wichita Falls city booster noted that absolutely nothing happened there in August. He searched for ideas, and the bike ride was the best and probably only one. The event has mushroomed.

The availability of reasonably priced real estate is one of the reasons McMurtry lives there. He buys out bookstores that go out of business in large expensive cities, then cuts his overhead considerably at AC.

Did you see the 1964 Goldwater campaign flyer near the check out?

Nosy inquiry: How did Ammo get his nickname? Blew up stuff?

One last comment on McMurtry and Archer City. Here's a link to a fairly good ABC report.
