Pirah,

But you don't need to know if their technology is the best from a technical point of view.

No, but you need to have an opinion about the likelihood of whether or not the darned thing will work. Continuing with the Qualcomm example, I wouldn't have been nearly so excited about buying Qualcomm purely as the voice-based CDMA gorilla. The real potential is in the future tornados from which Qualcomm can hopefully emerge as the Gorilla much as Cisco emerged from its four tornados. How do I, a lowly carpetologist, have any idea about whether or not CDMA's HDR will work? I'll never have a clue. But when I examine the track record of management and the track record of the contradictory competitors' statements, I can sleep a lot easier at night that I, the juror, probably decided accurately about which witness provided accurate testimony. In 1999 when I invested, I couldn't use the behavior of the value chain to determine whether or not HDR will work because HDR wasn't a tested, working product.
