Typical Cromwellian bs artist. You start your post by calling me a liar, then wind up admitting I'm at least half right. Your post deserves a thoughtful reply, which I don't have time for right now. I think the UK is probably the least racist country in Europe, but the attitude is appalling to the south of you, where immigration numbers are higher. And it isn't limited to the dregs of society, my friend. It runs throughout the bureaucracy.

Hi there... May I barge into your chattering??

Re: The Scandanavian countries are historically almost absent racism... (post #19845)

I seem to remember that a coupla years ago Sweden was blamed for its eugenics (and the consequent sterilization of allegedly insane Swedes...) And then, what about Knut Hamsun:

If race relations were so rosy in the UK, how come Yahoo! had to start a "Racial Violence in England" heading?

dailynews.yahoo.com

As I once quipped: "Americans are racist people who nurse their racism, whereas Europeans are repressed xenophobes..."

About three weeks ago, I caught a newscast on a French radio relating that a French MEP (Member of Euro Parliament) complained about the lack of (ethnic) diversity within the EU... The EU representative was even quoted as saying that he was the only colored MEP! So I guess the fellow was Harlem Désir --but I've been unable to check it out...

harlemdesir.com

Besides, I guess both of us agree that the UK can't speak for the rest of Europe, as far as race relations are concerned... I suspect that UK elites, somehow, get spurred on by the American experience. Since both America and Great Britain share the same language, the British (upper) middle classes are much aware of what's going on across the Atlantic, and as they look back on Europe they can't help but see the cultural "contrast". Add to that the WWII legacy that allowed Britain to cast itself as an anti-fascist/nazi victor and you can see why the Brits scramble to Americanize their social fabric...
